Man sentenced to freedom restriction and fine for calling policeman 'animal' online

On February 19, the court of Brest voblast found Vital Talstsyak guilty of publicly insulting a representative of the authorities over the performance of his official duties. That is an offense under Article 369 of the Criminal Code, the human rights center “Viasna” reports.

Judge Ludzmila Rudzina has sentenced him to 1 year 6 months without sending him to an open-type correctional facility. In addition, Vital must pay to the injured employee of Baranavichy police department Syarhei Koush the compensation for moral damage of 1,500 BYN, the state fee of 87 rubles and a cell phone.

On 27 August Vitali Talstsyak wrote a commentary under the photo of district inspector Syarhei Koush, posted in the OK.ru social network. After reading that the police officer took part in the dispersal of peaceful protesters during the post-election protests and using violence against them, Vital did not hold back his emotions and left the comment: “You, Captain, are an animal”.
