Former diplomat proposes to form parallel foreign ministry abroad

Former minister and envoy Pavel Latushka, who is currently a member of the board of the opposition Coordination Council, has come forward with a proposal to establish an alternative Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.

The body might be set up outside the country, the politician told Dozhd TV channel. Addressing the incumbent Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makey, he stressed that taking such a step would be far from impossible.

“A number of other [Belarusian] diplomats have resigned today; thus, a parallel Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus can be formed without any problems,” Latushka said.

In a recent interview with Belsat TV, Pavel Latushka noted that both junior and senior employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic missions who had showed solidarity with protesters on social media platforms or participated in rallies were fired. In his opinion, the leadership ‘started purging the ministry’.

According to him, the opposition and the Coordination Council are open to the dialogue with Belarusian officials in order to overcome the current crisis in the republic.

As reported earlier, Lukashenka’s strongest rival Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya initiated the creation of the Coordination Council as part of taking urgent measures to restore law and order in Belarus as well as to ensure the transfer of power in the country. Belarus’ Prosecutor General opened a criminal case over establishing the Council, naming it a ‘threat to national security’. The authorities believe the body aims at seizing power in Belarus. In early September, Belarusian special services gave Latushka an unpleasant choice: either he leaves the country, or a criminal case will be instituted against him.
