When Sunday’s Unity March was coming to its end, brutal detentions and beatings started in downtown Minsk. Numerous videos of masked plainclothed people with clubs and truncheons in their hands hunting for peaceful protesters have gone viral on the Internet.
When some protesters were trying to find shelter in one of the cafes in Victors’ Avenue, not far from Nyamiha Street, the unknown attackers destroyed its glass door. Videos show someone hitting the glass door, and then taking people out of the cafe.
A bit later, a number of Belarusian media reported that the person who broke the glass bears a strong resemblance to Colonel Mikalai Karpyankou, head of the Main Directorate for Combating Organised Crime and Corruption. One can compare the photos taken by colleagues from Onliner.by:
In turn, Volha Chamadanava, spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry, claims that the security officers repeatedly asked to open the door. It should be noted that the officers were not wearing uniform and had no insignia.
