Over 30 days in custody: Miss Belarus-2008 Volha Khizhynkova still not freed

Volha Khizhynkova, the holder of the title Miss Miss Belarus-2008 and a former press secretary of FC Dynamo Brest, has already spent 33 days in the notorious detention centre in Akrestsin Street in Minsk.

The term of detention was extended, the staff of tinformed her family on Friday. Her husband and friends were waiting for her release all day, but unfortunately, the woman did not go at large.

“Somewhere at the back of my mind I presumed that it might happen, but with all my heart I wanted to meet and hug her today. I was told that she was serving her term and would not be released today. The court gave a ruling that she would continue serving,” her husband Ivan Marozau said.

Khizhynkova was detained on November, 8 during Sunday’s protest march. Then was sentenced to 12 days in jail. As there was certain discrepancy in the testimony provided by the man who was witnessing against her in court, the case was sent for revision. However, a few days later, she stood trial under the same article 23.34 of the Code of Administrative Offences on one more charge and got another 15 days.

During her being in custody, Khizhynkova was tried for the trird time and sentenced to another 15 day term of administrative arrest. Taking into account today’s statement by the prison staff, the three terms were summed, and she is likely to spend another nine days under arrest.

In the wake of the 2020 presidential election, Volha Khizhynkova repeatedly expressed outrage over the situation in Belarus and spoke out against police abuse and violence. In September, Volha lost her job at the National School of Beauty due to her active citizenship.
