Pompeo calls Lukashenka about 'one of the citizens'

On October 24, the US Secretary of State phoned Alyaksandr Lukashenka, “Pool of the First” reports.

The conversation between Lukashenka and Mike Pompeo lasted for about half an hour. Among other things they spoke about the “fate of one of the citizens of the United States and the Republic of Belarus,” ONT reports. Perhaps it was the political prisoner Vital Shklyarau.

In a conversation with Pompeo, Lukashenka said that Russia is the main ally of Belarus and noted Moscow’s support in the current period. At the same time, he stressed that the Russian Federation does not interfere in the internal affairs of Belarus, but the countries are ready to jointly respond to external threats.

Lukashenka also “informed his counterpart about the national dialogue, which is now being actively conducted in Belarus,” the ONT TV channel reports. The Secretary of State, in turn, stressed that he remains a supporter of the sovereignty and independence of Belarus.

On October 23, Pompeo discussed the situation in Belarus by telephone with the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell, the European Foreign Service reported.

The representatives of the US and the EU again called on the Belarusian authorities to enter into a dialogue with “real representatives of civil society, in particular with the Coordination Council”.

The EU and the US reaffirmed their strong support for the independence and sovereignty of Belarus.
