Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) is investigating a criminal case initiated against a Belarusian border guards, RFE/RL reports.
An officer of the operational and investigative department of the Pinsk border detachment is suspected of preventing the Ukrainian Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations from conducting the ‘legal activity’ in the course of a ‘special period’. In Ukraine, he may face up to 8 years in prison.
The case was opened in October, 2019. A citizen of Ukraine gave evidence against the Belarusian officer claiming the latter had recruited him October 2017 in the Belarusian checkpoint Nevel; he was expected to provide information about the activities, weapons and equipment of the Lutsk detachment of border guards, as well as the details of the protection of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border in Volyn and Rivne regions.
In July 2018, the Ukrainian contacted the SBU and confessed to providing assistance to the Republic of Belarus in ‘performing subversive activities against Ukraine’. According to the security agency, the Belarusian border guard has used 11 mobile numbers when coordinating the work of recruits.
